Howard Dean seems to have two problems these days. First off, he wants the spotlight. You can tell just by watching him for five minutes that he can't stand it when someone else gets attention. But that only compounds his second problem which is the fact that he doesn't have anything original to say. Because of this, Dean has decided to steal the Murtha-ism that we can't win in Iraq.

In a most unoriginal speech, he goes on to compare Iraq to Vietnam and insinuate that the Iraqi people are too helpless to take care of themselves. He then concludes with the most original "We cannot have our troops being targets there."

Taken along with his antics during the last Presidential primaries and his shenanigans since, this has made me see Dean in a whole new light... more...

Well, you can tell that an election year is coming up. The Democrats are trying to indict Tom Delay for anything that they can possibly scrape up. Democratic mouthpieces are coming out of the woodwork to talk about how corrupt this administration is and attempting to tie them to every wrongdoer being indicted, investigated, charged or on trial. They've even trying to use the 9/11 comission in their desperate grab for power. It seems to me that when the original 9/11 report came out, they went to great lengths not to blame anyone for that horrible act of terrorism. Yes, Clinton could have done things differently. So could most Presidents before him. Of course that doesn't keep the Democrats from taking that report and attempting to point fingers.

It seems that the one thing they want to harp on most is the lack of a unified communication system for all police, fire, emergency and other first responders. The 9/11 comission had recommended this as a suggestion in their report. Now Democrats are saying that this "Republican stranglehold" on Congress is preventing anyone from doing anything to implement it. A number of Democratic congressmen are attempting to place the blame solely at the feet of the Republicans for this not happening yet. Now, I can't seem to find a straight story on the whole thing, but it looks to me as if Congress has been attempting to free up some spectrum for this for some time. There is currently a law that requires TV broadcasters to give up analog spectrum in favor of digital by December 31, 2006. Unfortunately, there was also a huge loophole left in that law. TV broadcasters only have to give up the spectrum in areas where 85% of the TV sets are digital capable. By those standards, it could take quite some time to clear that spectrum. Senator McCain (a Republican of all things) and Conrad Burns (another Republican) are attempting to change this by setting a hard date of January 1, 2009 for release of the disputed spectrum. This bill was amended in comittee (by another Republican!) to set the deadline at 2008 instead of 2009. It has currently been introduced to the Senate, but I can't find the status of it from there.

Now, there were a number of Democrats on TV last night at a press conference taking every possible shot at their Republican counterparts, and of course the emergency spectrum was something they harped on quite a bit. I don't seem to recall, however, any of them mentioning McCain's actions. But hey, maybe they just forgot. No, that couldn't be, because they actually did mention one part of McCain's bill. They mentioned the fact that the original estimate for getting the needed spectrum was $15 Billion, but the Republicans were only willing to spend $500 million on it. Their conclusion, of course, was that the Republicans wanted to put a cheap price tag on the safety of American citizens. Of course the actual truth of the matter is that passing McCain's bill will only cost a small fraction of what they started out wanting to spend. I can only see saving $14.5 million as a Good Thing.

The yammering went on for quite a while after that, but to be honest I lost interest in listening to how Evil Bush and his Republican Cronies are responsible for all the woes in our society. One of the reporters at that press conference must have gotten a little tired of it as well. He asked them why, if these issues were so important, the Democrats hadn't done anything about them. That was when the whole "Republican stranglehold" was mentioned.

So I just want to make sure that I have this straight. A conservative judge on the Supreme Court is such a horrendous threat to our American way of life that the Democrats are willing to stop the entire government from moving forward by filibuster simply to prevent him from being appointed. But when it comes to potentially saving the lives of thousands, or even millions of Americans, you are completly powerless? Something about that doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure that any Senator or Congressman can introduce a bill. And I'm pretty sure that there are enough Democrats still in both houses that it would at least stand some reasonable chance of getting through. So take a good, hard look at yourself and give us a real answer. If this issue is as important as you say it is, are you REALLY doing everything you can to make sure it is taken care of?

(Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) Kings and presidents of the 57 nations comprising the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will meet for an emergency summit meeting tomorrow in the city of Mecca. Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz called the meeting to discuss the Muslim world's pressing issues and predicaments. According to OIC officials, the meeting's emphasis will be "reforming, restructuring, and redefining the OIC charter and its mission."

Specific agenda items to be considered include:

- Adoption of a 10-year plan to restructure the Islamic nation,

- Approve a name change for the OIC to "Organization of Islamic Countries,"

- Discuss and implement proposals to address Islamophobia,

- Implement a strengthened Islamic academy of jurists to issue unified fatwas,

- Discuss and implement reduced obstacles to trade and business among Muslim countries,

- Discuss proposals for the empowerment of women, and

- Discuss a proposal for OIC member countries to collectively design and build a passenger plane. Late-night joke writers take note.

Notably, the leaders of all 57 member states of the OIC have been invited to the meeting with the exception of non-Muslim leaders. Non-Muslims are not allowed in Mecca (Makkah). According to OIC spokesman Atta Mannan, "Reports in the local media that they would monitor the proceedings on closed circuit television in Jeddah are not true," he said. "We can't expect the heads of state to sit in Jeddah while the summit is taking place in Makkah," he said. "They will, however, be represented by high-level delegations."

OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu stated that the body wants to have a significant role in resolutions adopted by the UN. He also stated that the OIC should have a seat on the UN Security Council. The summit is planned to end on Thursday.

A French civilian has been taken hostage in Iraq. His name is Bernard Planche. He is reported to be a civil engineer helping to rebuild Iraq. This would be the fourth French hostage taken in Iraq since the beginning of the war.

Forbes:

Masked gunmen grabbed a French engineer off the streets of Baghdad on Monday, the latest in a spate of kidnappings of Westerners that coincides with Saddam Hussein's trial and the run-up to parliamentary elections. ...

French officials had also warned Planche, who was abducted from outside his home in the Mansour district of the capital, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Jean-Baptiste Mattei said.

The kidnappers used three cars to surrounded Planche and take him away, police Capt. Qassim Hussein said. Planche is the head of mission for a group that works on U.S.-funded water projects.

Diplomats have said they are in close contact with Iraqi authorities to win the release of the hostages.

Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for today's murders of Israeli shoppers near a Netanya mall. While such acts of terror are nothing new from Palestinian terrorists, the image above and to the right shows just why this is a much larger problem. It is a photo of an Islamic Jihad rally in Gaza. The rally is both public and sanctioned by the Palestinian Authority.

The image below was taken at an Islamic Jihad press conference. Yes, you got that right, this was taken at a press conference held by various terrorist organizations and known by the Palestinian Authority.

Whatever happened to the Bush Doctrine of treating terrorists and the states that sponsor them alike? Clearly, the Palestinian Authority is much more closely linked to terrorist organizations than Iraq ever was.

Police Insp.-Gen. Moshe Karadi told reporters that the bomber was "identified 15 meters in front of the mall by policemen and a security guard. Police managed to keep him away from the gate, and he blew himself up when police approached him to conduct a search of his bags."...

The Islamic Jihad took responsibility for the attack in a phone call to Palestinian journalists, identifying the bomber as Lutfi Amin Abu Salem, a resident of the northern West Bank village of Kafr Rai, located between the towns of Jenin and Tulkarm.

When US Representative Jack Murtha publicly characterized our troops as "broken, worn out" and "living hand-to-mouth," I decided to check the allegation out. Since Murtha was complaining mainly about military equipment, I reasoned that the symptoms would show up at major theater repair depots.

So I sought out the opinion of an NCO I know, who supervises mechanics at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. Early in his deployment, this soldier had mentioned trouble getting parts and snafus like the engines of some "up-armored" Humvees not being able to handle the extra weight of the armor.

The sergeant had not heard about Murtha's comments; outside news sources are few at Arifjan, and the soldiers there are too busy keeping things in good repair to spend time surfing the 'net.

We have finally obtained portions of the unedited hostage video of four Western peace activists. The names of the four activists are American Thomas Fox--who is also a blogger, Canadians Harmeet Singh Sooden and James Loney, and British citizen Norman Kember. The Jawa Report was the first media outlet to reveal the names of the hostages.

14 Lets do something about the video. I mean we cant get a better FTP site than that? Standard Windows Media Players cant access the video, even if you save target as. We are only allowed to update the Player so much. And btw, you get plenty military who access your site. Nice job GW!!!!!

(Salt Lake City) American Atheists Inc. has filed suit in U.S. District Court to remove highway crosses placed to memorialize Utah Highway Patrol troopers who have died in the line of duty. The crosses stand about 12 feet high and display the trooper's name and the Utah Highway Patrol emblem (example). They are placed near the location where the troopers were slain.

Specifically targeted by the lawsuit are Col. Scott Duncan, superintendent of the UHP; John Njord, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation; D'Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, executive director of the Department of Administrative Services; and F. Keith Stepan, state facilities director.

The plaintiffs are Stephen Clark, Michael Rivers, Richard Andrews and American Atheists Inc.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

Rivers said the purpose of the suit is to eliminate religious symbols used by government agencies and placed on government land. American Atheists claim to have a membership of 30 million people. They are not opposed to memorials, just the crosses.

"We feel the department of transportation, by allowing the Utah Highway Patrol Association to pick a religious symbol is unfair. We think it should be totally secular with no religious theme," Rivers said. "[The cross] is a Christian religious symbol. People will look at those and automatically assume that religion is a part of it."

American Atheists Inc. is asking for $1 in damages and the removal of all crosses on government property. I believe a blind person can see what the atheists are aiming for. Logically, it's the removal of all crosses at veterans' cemeteries throughout the nation. American Atheists also wants the court to rule that it's unconstitutional to display the highway patrol insignia on a cross.
